Figure 02: It has been suggested that this fragment is a section of keel (so says the sign at the museum). However, this is unlikely as the fragment is parcelled. This fragment is about 1 meter long, 0.3 m wide, 0.4 m high (orientated as shown). The top show a blackish-grey deposit which is suspected to be parceling -- tar soaked canvas steched tightly around the wood. Note the area on the right side (near the centre of the image) has a cutout for a brace (?) coming out at the 45 degree angle. Also note the extreme wear due to wave action.
It seem that, since the fragment is parcelled, that it was not used below the water line externally. In fact, its seem most likely that the bit was as was a part of an internal structure used below deck.
